I'll be pretty brief in how things are going.
Bradon
Owens' baptism was great! There were a lot of people there (because he
is dating a Hmong girl in the Asian branch so lots of members from that
congregation came as well). Elder Gilray baptized him and I confirmed
him the next day. We also sang "We'll Bring the World His Truth" at the
baptism and that went really well. The best part was when Brandon bore
his testimony at the end. He talked about the story in the New
Testament when Christ's apostles were toiling in the storm trying to
cross the Sea of Galilee when Jesus walked on the water and Peter came
out to him. He recounted the story so well and told how Christ calls
out to each one of us but most of us want to stay in the boat where it's
comfortable instead of coming out to him as Peter did. He said that the
Lord had been calling to him for about a year before a specific pair of
missionaries came to him. The spirit was so strong as he bore his
testimony.
Brandon received the Aaronic Priesthood on Sunday and is going to the
temple on Tuesday
to do baptisms for the dead with the ward. He is awesome! The night
before his baptism we had dinner with him and his roommate, America at Casa Flores.
It was fun to talk to them and talk about the baptism. Brandon had
written something up that morning comparing what he has felt as a runner
to what the scriptures say when they relate gospel topics to "a race".
It was really cool and Elder Gilray and I both got copies
of what he had written to keep. We also talked a lot with America. She
is always interested to get to know the missionaries but never wants to
stay and learn more. She considers herself Catholic but doesn't go to church.
She sat in on one lesson with us 2 weeks ago and came to FHE last week.
We convinced her to come to Brandon's baptism during her lunch break
and also to come to church for Sacrament meeting the next day. We saw a
big change in her over those 3 days. We're starting to teach her this
week and we hope things will go well! She's great, just shy I'm sure
because she doesn't know too much about the gospel and has fallen into
the rut that many Latino people fall in by considering themselves
"Catholic" more as a cultural thing than a religious thing.
We don't have any other
investigators that are progressing too much right now. Brandon and
Kenneth are both working on quitting smoking. We are looking for new people all
the time.
I'm excited for this next week of missionary work and can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for us!
Les Quiero Mucho,
Elder Gaskill
